Shoulder pain

The shoulder - the most mobile joint in the body – is made up of bones held in place by muscles, tendons and ligaments that are designed to work together to allow the shoulder to move freely in multiple directions.  Mobility, however, comes at the expense of stability, making shoulder injuries and pain common conditions that we frequently treat.   Pain, ranging from mild to severe, may occur in the joint itself or in the surrounding soft tissues.

What is the cause?

Even with all the surrounding tissue supporting the shoulder joint, it can shift out of alignment causing the muscles and ligaments to pull and function incorrectly.  This can lead to muscle spasms, inflammation and pain.  General wear and tear, repetitive use (such as from a sport), falls, traumas and even poor posture can contribute to shoulder issues.

Most shoulder problems fall into four major categories:

  • Tendon inflammation or tear (bursitis, tendonitis)
  • Instability (dislocatio n/subluxation, muscle weakness)
  • Arthritis (degeneration, wear and tear)
  • Fracture (broken bones)

Other conditions that can cause shoulder pain include: rotator cuff problems, frozen shoulder, and shoulder impingement.

Chiropractic can help!

After the shoulder is analyzed and assessed, gentle, corrective adjustments can be performed to properly reposition the joints.  Correcting these imbalances helps to ensure smooth and even shoulder motion.  In addition, having the neck and upper back adjusted will also help correct shoulder problems by restoring proper nerve supply and function to the area.  Heat or ice therapy and rehabilitative exercises may also be prescribed to help relax muscles or reduce inflammation.
